Blog series: In my Closet – Waiting on Martha

Happy Monday everyone, hope you had a great weekend! The husband’s family is here visiting, so we had a family filled weekend! I also started watching Mad Men and so far I like it (I know, I’m so late on it!). Remember the crepes recipe I shared last week? Well, since I had some dulce de leche left, I made some crepes on Friday and I added 2 scoops of ice cream, they were insanely delicious! Highly recommend it!

Today, my sweet friend Mandy from Waiting on Martha is sharing her fashion styling tips and some snaps from her closet, hope you enjoy the interview! And stay tuned for a fun collaboration with her next week 😉

Must have items in your closet: Button down/boyfriend shirts in cotton from J.Crew and in silk from Equipment.  The minnie pant from J.Crew I have it in lots of colors..they’re my jeans.  Stripes, I have SO many striped shirts, sweaters, jackets, etc.  One can never get tired of stripes. Jack Rogers Navajo sandals. Sperry Top Siders.  Faux fur vests. A tuxedo style blazer, I have a black one from Thyskens for Theory and an ivory one from Elizabeth and James. Black and Nude Patent Leather Christian Loubutain heels.

Latest purchase: I’ve been purchasing a lot (too much really) preparing for spring but my biggest splurge was this new Celine bag

Favorite color combo: Black and white with pops of metallics (gold, silver or rose gold) in the winter and navy and white with pops of orange or red in the summer.

Favorite online retailers: Too many to name, but Net A Porter, ShopBop, J. Crew, The Outnet, Gilt, Zara, Madewell.

If you could only shop at one shop which one would it be? That would be impossible, but if I had to narrow it down J.Crew for everyday and Net-A-Porter for statement pieces.

Who are your style icons? Jackie O, Lauren Hutton, Jenna Lyons, and the Gwens (Paltrow & Stefani)

Most treasured item (s): My engagement ring/wedding bands and my Cartier watch the Mr. got me for my birthday last year.

How do you keep your closet organized? I don’t! Honestly
it’s a disaster the majority of the time…I just don’t have enough
space! But I put everything by type and color, so all of my button downs
are in once area and categorized by color, same with pants, jeans,
skirts, dresses, sweaters, etc.  I also try to keep everything in view,
if I can’t see something I’ll forget I own it and it will never get
worn. In our next house the Mr. promised me I could turn a spare bedroom
into my own personal closest/dressing space so I’m already planning for
that.

How often do you purge your closet? Semi Annually (spring and fall) when I switch my closets out.  I have 2 closets and my main closest holds the clothes that pertain to that season so when I switch the closets out I purge.

Any personal styling tricks you’d like to share? Show one
not both. What I mean is if you’re going to wear a short skirt, shorts,
or whatever that shows some major leg go conservative on top.  Or vice
versa. You always want to leave something to the imagination and be a
lady. Know your body and what looks good on you.  I have problem areas
like most everyone else in the world and I try to minimize them not
bring attention to them. So as much as I want to buy certain pieces I
don’t because I know they will do nothing for my body.

Do you have any shopping advice for others that you’d like to share? Invest in the classics and save your money when it comes to the fads or trends. Buy good handbags and shoes…you’re always the same size in shoes and handbags!
