Here’s a simple guide to Fall layering that never, ever, fails. Of course, there are many more ways to layer and ways to get the most out of your clothes (including Summer faves) or simply those pieces you might own that don’t exactly offer warmth on their own once the temperatures start to drop. But I’ll leave those creative ways to layering for tomorrow and today just focus on the basics.
When it comes to creating a multi-dimensional layered look all you have to do is follow 4 simple steps:
1. Set your base with a wardrobe staple: a simple tee (long or short sleeved), a cami (if you’re dressing up) or a basic tank. The base you choose will basically depend on the occasion and how cold it is. You’d probably want to wear a silk cami if you’re going out or to the office and a simple white tee if you’re dressing down let’s say for a weekend look.
2. Since we called the first step your base, let’s call the following your first layer, and for this I recommend choosing a shirt in either a classic solid color, chambray or a plaid flannel. You can choose to either button it all the way up, leave some buttons undone or wear it open.
3. Your second layer will consist of a sweater for added warmth. Here you can choose between a cardigan, a pullover (crewneck or v-neck) or a vest (sweater vest, quilted vest, or puffer would work). The great thing about vests is that they add that dimension without the bulk, so you still achieve that layered look but your sleeves don’t feel stuffed 😉
4. Lastly, to finish it up and complete the look, throw on your jacket or coat. If you still find that you need an extra piece, wrap a cozy blanket scarf around your neck and you’re good to go!
