Food File: Wholewheat Churros & Hot Chocolate

I was recently approached by Bing to try their new smart search app, and because I’m such a visual person I had to give it a try. I’ve been meaning to make churros for months, and nothing like having friends over for dinner on a cold winter night as an excuse to make a batch of these with some hot chocolate, after all, if this isn’t the season for this delicious treat, then I don’t know when it is 😉

I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking out for recipes I really like to see the end result, nothing as motivating as a great photo of something you’re about to eat right? So I thought that giving the smart search app a try was a no brainer.

Below is a screen shot from the search:

And after realizing that all of the recipes were pretty similar, and quite frankly, kind of easy (to my surprise) I decided to tweak a little bit this one.

What you need:
– 1 cup water
– 2 1/2 tbsp sugar
– 2 tbsp butter
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 3/4 cup wholewheat flour
– 1/4 cup regular flour

Garnish:
– 1/2 cup white sugar
– 1 tsp cinammon

What to do:
. In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring to boil the water, butter, sugar and salt. As soon as it starts boiling remove from the heat and stir in the flours. It should look like this:

. Then, in a frying pan, using a pastry bag, fry them until golden (you don’t need to deep-fry them, trust me, shallow frying works out perfectly). Remove from pan, and roll into the garnish mixture. And that’s it! See how easy? Then proceed to eat them with a big mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows 😉

Ps: The metallic rimmed mugs, gold napkin rings, and napkins (old) are from West Elm
