Life File: 3 Ways to Stay Active and Have Fun This Summer

Summer is the perfect season to enjoy the sunshine and stay active, and being such a short period here in Canada, the best way to go about it is to take full advantage of the opportunities it offers. Bike rides, easy strolls, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, they all are pretty easy and fun outdoor activities that keep us active. Whether you’re staying in your city, or traveling abroad for a couple of days, make sure you fit in any of these as they are a fun way to explore around and exercise!

Renting a kayak, canoe or even a standup paddle board is a fun way to enjoy being in the water and a fun weekend activity. My friend Victoria and I recently rented canoes while in Ottawa and loved it. Last year I went on a couple of kayak trips with my pal Aylin when we went up north to Killarney, so as you can see, where there’s water, there’s a place to rent one of these. You can also buy one (I’ve seen inflatable ones at Canadian Tire if space is an issue), but regardless of what you decide to do, it’s a great way to explore around, enjoy beautiful views and stay active while having fun.
As much as I love cycling as a sport and as a way to keep my cardiovascular levels, there’s nothing more relaxing than a cruiser stroll! If I could own (and store!) two bikes I would have a cruiser too, aren’t they fun? Here in Toronto we are lucky to have the Martin Goodman Trail where you can ride along and enjoy the beautiful lake views, and the Island just a short 10 min boat ride away where you can either take your bike with you or rent one there. Grab some snacks on the go, take a picnic blanket and a book with you, and as soon as you spot a nice place to chill, enjoy a picnic and then continue on. It’s such a relaxing weekend plan, don’t you agree?
Last but not least, another great way to spend some active time outside is to go for a hike! Hitting a trail is not only a fantastic way to get some exercise in, but a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature. For a list of trails here in Toronto, here’s a great article with numerous options 🙂
Don’t let the season pass without taking full advantage of the outdoors! There’s nothing like being outside in nature!
