Outfits File: Layering Basics and Tips

Happy Monday everyone, hope your weekend was great! We had beautiful blue skies on both days so the weekend was glorious! February was such a mild month compared to December and January and it looks like the mild winter temperatures are sticking longer… no complains here! It’s so nice to break away from the parka from time to time and layer up for a more interesting look, you know?

I’m sure you have noticed that I love layering, and one simple formula that never fails is: Shirt + Sweater + Jacket + Coat. The different textures add dimension and the layers will keep you warm and chic! Plus, layering is one easy way to avoid wearing your parka when you’re a bit tired of it. If you’re in need of more foolproof layering combinations you can check out this post where I broke down a few of them, layer by layer. Below are some tips I recommend when layering:

. Don’t be afraid to pair multiple jackets. Whether it is a denim jacket under a leather jacket or blazer, or a leather jacket under a coat, you can’t go wrong.
. If you’re wearing a sweater over a shirt, it’s best if they are different colours so that the shirt’s collar stands out; having said this, if they happen to be the same colour (like it does in my look), make sure there’s an added detail that differentiates them (in my outfit is the skinny tie).
. Mixing different textures makes the look more interesting. Wool, denim, leather, cotton…
. Go from thin to thick. Start with a cotton tee or shirt, then add a sweater or hoodie, follow with a jacket or blazer, finish with a coat.
. Make sure that the colours you’re wearing compliment each other.
. If you’re going to wear patterns, it’s best if they are different, otherwise there’s no dimension to your look.
