Blog Series: In my Closet / Natalie Merrillyn

Today, in another edition of In My Closet, I have my friend Natalie from Natalie Merrillyn sharing a peek into her closet and chatting about her personal style, enjoy it! 😉

Describe your personal style: My style is classic with a little bit of an edge. I love a good pair of skinny jeans and flats but I’m not afraid of bold prints and sexy heels. 🙂

Must have items in your closet: A pair of perfectly fitting skinny jeans (I love these by J Brand and these by Rag & Bone), lightweight blazers and jackets that are easy to layer (I love Helmut Lang for those!) soft tees (I have a few of these and love them).

Latest purchase: I just bought this gorgeous Carven jacket during the huge Harrod’s sale and can’t wait to wear it all Fall!

Who are your style icons?
I love Olivia Palermo, Miranda Kerr, and Miroslava Duma.

Favorite online retailers: I’m always browsing Shopbop, Net-A-Porter, and The Outnet.

If you could only shop at one shop which one would it be? That’s a tough one but I’d have to go with Shopbop. Their shipping and returns are unbeatable, and their selection and sales are the best!

How often do you purge your closet? I purge at least a few times a year. If I notice that I’m not wearing any item of clothing consistently, I’ll donate it or eBay it. It helps keep everything organized (and makes room for things that I know I’ll be wearing!)

How do you keep your closet organized? I organize it by category: tops (long sleeve, short sleeve, sleeveless), blazers, skirts (short to long), pants, dresses (by season). I fold my sweaters and jeans to save room for things that need to be hung in the closet. Felt hangers are such a life saver for my hung items and make everything look uniform and neat.

Most treasured item: Maybe cliché, but my engagement ring and band. My most favorite accessory. 🙂

Any personal styling tricks you’d like to share? I look at my outfits in layers — the first layer is your basic bottom and top. In the summer layer with jewelry and belts. In the Fall it’s easy to layer with vests and jackets. I love adding dimension to an outfit – makes it more interesting!

Do you have any shopping advice for others you’d like to share? I try to never make impulsive decisions when I’m shopping — I like to mull things over a bit, then decide. I’m sure you’ve heard this bit of advice, but it’s true: invest in classics you’ll wear over and over again. Don’t spend too much when it comes to trendy pieces.

*Thanks so much Natalie! 🙂
